This lot consists of a hand painted oil on unstretched gessoed canvas, executed in the abstract style of expressionist painter Jean-Paul Riopelle (French Canadian,1923 -2002). A beautiful statement, full of contrasting color and uninhibited feeling. Standing in front of this piece, the viewer quickly becomes absorbed in its sweeping, expressive strokes. A testament to the vibrancy and raw talent associated with Jean-Paul Riopelle. "Riopelle" is hand written in lower right.This piece is bold, strong and expressive! Jean-Paul Riopelle was born in Montreal, Canada in 1923. He was the only son of an architect and began painting when only eight years old. He later studied engineering at Montreal Polytechnique but switched to the serious study of art in the early 1940s. He moved to Paris in the 1940s where he became close friends with Albert Giacometti, Joan Miro and Samuel Beckett.
