This lot consists of an oil painting on board, done in the modern art style of Marc Chagall (French, 1887-1985). "Marc Chagall" is hand written at bottom right. Image depicts a couple in love with their heads pressed together. The iconic Chagall goat peers over the woman's head as a horn player serenades. Painting is artfully executed in the dream-like, surrealist style for which Chagall was so well known. This modernist piece would be a highlight of any fine art collection. Art critic Robert Hughes referred to Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century" (though Chagall saw his work as "not the dream of one people but of all humanity"). According to art historian Michael J. Lewis, Chagall was considered to be "the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists". For decades, he "had also been respected as the world's pre-eminent Jewish artist". Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the UN and the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Paris Opera.

Antique frame is old with the gesso cracking and crumbling in places. The painting has some visible hairs under the glass. Overall paint and board are solid. Oil color and signature are bright, vibrant and show very well.
