Beautiful 3/4 life size bronze patinated white metal Torchere signed A. Carrier. The sculpture depicts a classical lady in a robe holding a tall amphora bottle on her shoulder. She is beautifully sculptured. Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (French, 1824-1887) is one of the most important French 19th century sculptors. His highest priced auction records include Angelica (Chained to a rock) sculpted in white marble with gilt bronze chains, made in 1866, including base it measured 94.5 inches high. It was sold April 20, 2005 at Sotheby's London Lot #131 for $724,760. His next highest priced were a pair Spring and Summer, 2 works gilt and patenated bronze and onyx circa 1850-1875, height 35.4 inches. These were sold at Christie's London April 29, 2010 lot # 100 for $366,529. This artist has numerous sculptures that have sold for more than or close to $100,000.00. A carved marble group of a mother and child, height 59 inches, sold at Christie's New York May 23, 1991 for $165,000.00. These auction records give you an idea of the value and importance of this sculptor, considered one of the most important sculptors of his time. This beautiful Torchere sculpture has the old wiring still inside the amphora bottle. It also has a gilt bronze high relief sculptured cap that may be attached to a lighting devise over the amphora bottle. An electrician may be able to use the existing wiring or install newer, safer wiring and add a candelabra to the top of the Torchere making it very useful as a beautiful light. The sculpture has some rubbing, and a few minor scuffs and old restorations to arm mentioned for the sake of accuracy. She measures 61-1/2 inches high to the top of the amphora bottle, not including the gilt bronze cap. Her widest width from elbow to elbow is 18 inches. Diameter at base 15-1/2 inches. Weight approximately 100 lbs. She has a beautiful face typical of the work and sculptures by A. Carrier Belleuse.
