Description
William IV of England King
William IV Huge & Bold Signature
A paper slip boldly signed by King William IV (1765-1837) as "William R." The "W" of William is formed of five elaborate loops including a terminal curlicue. The descending line of the "R" is slightly curtailed by the trimmed paper edge. The whole signature measures 6.375" x 1.625" alone. Inscribed "1837" at upper right. The document is inscribed in part verso "--the necessary directions accordingly. - And for so doing this Shall be your Warrant--". Overall light toning and expected paper folds, else near fine. The fragment measures 7.75" x 2.375" overall.
William IV never expected to be king. He was the third son of George III, and he ascended the throne in 1830 after the death of his two older brothers. During his 7-year-long reign, William IV enacted many reforms and was much more conscientious than his hedonistic brother George IV. William IV and Adelaide never had any living children, and none of William's illegitimate children were eligible to succeed him. Thus the crown passed to his niece, Victoria (1819-1901).
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
