J. Edgar Hoover Great Letter Re: Agent Going into the Army

2pp TLS signed by J. Edgar Hoover (1895-1972), Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as "J. Edgar Hoover" in blue ink on the bottom of the second page. Written in Washington, D.C. on December 30, 1954. On watermarked cream paper with "United States Department of Justice / Federal Bureau of Investigation" letterhead, complete with logo. Expected wear including light paper folds, staple marks, and filing hole punches, else near fine. 8" x 10.5".

In late December 1954, FBI Special Agent Edward J. Krupinsky announced his intention to leave the bureau and enlist in the military. In this letter to the departing agent, FBI Director Hoover outlined a few key administrative details concerning rank, pay, retirement, and life insurance, inviting Krupinsky to rejoin the bureau one day.

"Receipt is acknowledged of your letter of December 20, 1954, together with a copy of your orders to report for induction into the Armed Forces and you are advised that your resignation as a Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation is being accepted effective at the close of business December 31, 1954, active duty to cease at the same time…

For your information, the records will show your separation was for the purpose of military service, in which case your reinstatement rights under the Universal Military Training and Service Act of 1951 remain as though you were carried in a military leave without pay status. The position occupied by you at the time of your resignation, that of Special Agent, Grade GS 10, was a permanent one…"

Krupinsky's Special Agent rank within the bureau hierarchy, Grade GS 10, shows that he was a greenhorn or possibly even a recent academy graduate. It is unknown where Krupinsky served, or for what purpose, since hostilities against North Korea had abated by the summer of 1953. Declassified FBI documents from March 1976 indicate that Edward J. Krupinsky did indeed rejoin the bureau after his military service; he eventually became head of the Omaha Division.

J. Edgar Hoover's name is synonymous with the intelligence agency that he helped found in 1935: the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The detective served as Director of the Bureau of Investigation (the FBI's predecessor) from 1924-1935, and as Director of the FBI from its inception until his death in 1972. While Hoover took many liberties with the information he collected, critics agree that he also built up, enlarged, modernized, and legitimized the agency.
