WILSON HAROLD: (1916-1995) British Prime Minister 1964-70, 1974-76. T.L.S., Harold Wilson, one page, 4to, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 19th July 1967, to Mr. J. D. Harris in Cheltenham, on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister. Wilson responds to a further letter from his correspondent requesting his assistance in solving the unemployment problem of a Mr. Ted Cushnan and informs Harris 'I have again been in touch with the Ministry of Labour about the matter and am assured that they are continuing to do everything possible to help. They have discussed the problem with him and have been able to put him forward for a number of jobs.' Wilson concludes be remarking that he 'cannot give you any further details without the knowledge and consent of Mr. Cushnan'. Accompanied by the original envelope. A few very light, extremely minor creases to the right edge, not affecting the text or signature, VG Wilson's first period in office as Prime Minister, from when the present letter dates, coincided with a period of low unemployment and relative economic prosperity. Unemployment levels were reduced from around 400,000 to 371,000 by early 1966, however by March 1967 it stood at 631,000. They were to fall again before the end of the decade, standing at 582,000 by the time of the General Election in June 1970.
