Frontis foxed, otherwise generally quite clean with some occasional light soiling and/or light foxing in a few places (mostly near front of volume.) Very Good. *************************** FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY: "Ira Mayhew. Monroe Michn. Presented by the Author Nov. 29, 1845." Quite scarce. Seeking passage to the Mediterranean, the author hitched a ride with the U.S. Navy and found himself employed as chaplain on the ship. The text includes a lengthy chapter on the Navy of the United States, including remarks on the practice of flogging (pp. 383-434.)
