5th-6th century AD. A bronze scabbard chape element of Menghin's Type, Samson formed as a central pillar with facing male head flanked by two curved bird-heads (a visual reference to the god Woden and his raven messengers); rounded support pad beneath with ribbed collar. Cf. Menghin, W. Das Schwert im Frühen Mittelalter, Stuttgart, 1983, p.351. 6.84 grams, 36mm (1 1/2"). Found near Barrington, Cambridgeshire, UK. [No Reserve]
