Hunt Slonem

Expressionist composition of white butterflies over a powder blue background executed with Slonem's unmistakable sgraffito technique. Originally born in Maine Slonem attended Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana were he obtained a bachelor’s degree in painting and art history prior to moving to New York in 1973. Since then Slonem has gone on to be included in over fifty permanent museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and has been exhibited in thirty-one museums internationally. Outside of academic institutions Slonem’s work is a featured component of several corporate collections including Chase Manhattan Bank, Citibank, Goldman Sachs Co., and IBM among several others. Personally Slonem is an avid collector of antiques and unusual objects that he finds at flea markets, yard sales, and auctions to “clutter” his studio. He draws influence from his seventy pet birds to which he states he acts as their slave caring for them every morning before painting them. He believes in the importance of preserving nature and its wildlife placing it before himself and man. His personal drive for preservation has brought him to purchase eight historic properties across the United States to which he has restored and filled with antiques and items of his own creation. Slonem’s persona on top of his aesthetic are what make him an identifiable fixture in today’s art world.
