Item Details
Description
Carved from sycamore wood, shown mummiform with long tripartite wig, arms crossed over the chest, a seed sack on his back. Figure is heavily coated in a shiny black resin, on the back details of the seed sack contrast well in a pale creamy yellow. Most of this coating has been lost from the front, particularly where the name and titles would be written. An old tag that came with the piece reads "The Osiris, the scribe of the temple of Amun" on the obverse, the reverse states: "No 2895 19-20 Dy." Height: 17.1 cm (6-3/4"), Height with Stand: 19.2 cm (7-1/2").

PROVENANCE: Estate of Robert Kenyon, Utah acquired from the Ancient Arts Gallery, NY in the late 1950's/early 60's and then by descent. Shabti still resides in original box from sale and this will be included.

(no reserve)
Condition
Intact with heavy losses to the black glaze at the front possibly since purchase. The top of the head looks a tad too squared off so am speculating a little was removed due to damage as a form of conservation. The resin coating flakes easily so must be handled carefully. Has been glued to a presentable wood base and should be handled using the base. As with many wood shabtis, an unusual and interesting piece, especially the resin coating.
