Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Native American, Southwestern US, Anasazi (Ancient Puebloan) culture, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. Five finely carved scallop shell pendants (four of a similar size and one larger) and a turquoise-covered shell bead. The turquoise is cut in tiny pieces, attached to the shell in a mosaic-like pattern. This jewelry demonstrates the powerful trade network of the people of the ancient Southwest - for example, turquoise from what is now Colorado, Nevada, and California came into the Ancestral Puebloan center at Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, before dispersing outward to northern Mexico. Shells, meanwhile, came from the Gulf of Mexico, and shell necklaces have been found at many Puebloan archaeological sites like Mesa Verde. Size of largest shell: 1.9" W x 2.05" H (4.8 cm x 5.2 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-Richardson Museum collection, Massachusetts, USA; ex-Roland Engstrom collection, Massachusetts, USA
