Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Mayan / Olmec Territories, Proto-Mayan period, ca. 500 to 0 BCE. A fantastic grouping of early Mayan pottery figures, two of which are complete effigies, and the other two are fragmentary. First is a seated dwarf figure with attenuated legs, sinuous arms, a broad chest, and a thick neck which supports a globular head with a drooping headdress. Next is a fragmentary figure in a lustrous orange hue, with a large pectoral framing his chest; a large head displays expressive features and a multi-lobed coiffure. Third is a seated male figure, corpulent in form, with arms bent downwards to folded knees and stylized belly folds. Last is a large fragmentary figure with a powerful stance, a large discoid pectoral, a slender waist, and a large head atop a thick neck. Each face displays a drilled mouth and eyes, and all are beautiful examples from the earliest days of the Mayan Empire! Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size of largest (tallest fragmentary figure): 6.75" H (17.1 cm).

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
