Pre-Columbian, northwestern Costa Rica, Guanacaste-Nicoya, Middle / Late Polychrome periods, ca. 800 to 1550 CE. A fine hand-built ceramic bowl decorated with painted polychrome details. The wide circular bowl has a shallow basin as well as light indentations along the exterior walls and rests upon a trio of hollow mammiform feet, each filled with small balls that emit a rattling sound when jostled. The exterior is covered in thick red-slip stripes atop a cream-hued ground, and the interior boasts a pair of abstract anthropomorphic figures as well as an abstract register of orange, red, and grey linear panels. Size: 8.5" W x 4.75" H (21.6 cm x 12.1 cm).

One stable hairline fissure on rim, small chips to rim, body, and feet, with fading to original pigmentation, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
