Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, Abelam peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden male figure standing with wide-spread legs and delineated genitalia atop an integral circular plinth. The man is painted with a dark-brown pigment, holds his rigid arms next to his bulbous abdomen, and has rounded shoulders tapering to a stocky neck. The enormous head is dominated by a tall mask-like face with recessed eyes, a bulbous nose above a slender mouth, tab-shaped ears, and a conical brow, and several incised scarification marks along the cheeks. Size: 4.375" W x 19.5" H (11.1 cm x 49.5 cm).

Condition
Repair to right arm with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor nicks and abrasions to base, legs, body, and head, and a few stable fissures. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of original pigmentation throughout.
