Rare first state of this captivating map, with the imprint of Joducus Hondius.
The map was issued by Jodocus Hondius as part of his effort to produce a new modern atlas, less dependent on the Mercator plates that his father had acquired in 1604. He seems to have put together several "ad hoc collections' of the maps already cut to stimulate further interest. Six of these collections are known today. One of them has a letterpress title: Atlantis Maioris Appendix, probably made up by Jodocus or his widow in mid-1629. The present map was likely part of that collection. On Jodocus's death on August 18, 1629, the copperplates were sold to Willem Blaeu probably by Jodocus's widow. Blaeu removed the Hondius imprint and added his own, and published immediately 34 (of 40) of the maps as part of his first atlas. While examples of the Blaeu issue of this map of eastern Brazil are not that uncommon, examples with Hondius' imprint are quite rare. The map is oriented with north to the right of the chart. The interior is filled with small vignettes of indigenous animals and native scenes including cannibalism. Inset within a decorative border is a small map of Baya de Todos los Sanctos. In the sea are monsters, a galleon and two compass roses. The large title cartouche features a male and female Brazilian, both of whom are shown naked.
