Item Details
Description
CALDWELL’S 1ST ED GOD'S LITTLE ACRE, TOBACCO ROAD:
Assembled lot of Caldwell’s God’s Little Acre (pub. 1933) and two copies of Tobacco Road, each published in 1932 but with different boards and preface. All by Grosset & Dunlap.

God’s Little Acre: Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: 1st Edition. Book is scarce. The story of a man that declared one acre of his land to God. In very good condition with a good original dust jacket. The original orange cloth boards with dark green lettering are in fine condition. There is the slightest rubbing to the upper spine extremity. The pages within are in fine condition. The dust jacket is the original and the original price is unclipped. GOD'S LITTLE ACRE was so controversial that a literary board in New York attempted to censor it, leading to the author's arrest and trial for obscenity. Exonerated after a jury trial, the author counter-sued the literary society for false arrest and malicious prosecution. A social and economic study of poor whites, and basis for the 1958 Anthony Mann film starring Robert Ryan, Tina Louise, and Aldo Ray. It took over 20 years for the controversy to die down and for people to readily accept the plight of workers deprived of union protection during the 20s and 30s and the realistic racy scenes portrayed in the novel, tame by today's standards.

Tobacco Road:
Published by Grosset & Dunlap Publishers, New York, New York, U.S.A. (1932) Hardcover. in arrangement with Duell-Sloan & Pearce, Inc. Orange boards with art deco embossing bright reverse titles on green background on cover and spine. Clean straight and tight with crisp white pages. Endpapers age toning, light fraying to head and foot of spine, bumped corners. No broken hinges.
