Description
SOUTH CAROLINA VICTORIAN NEEDLEWORK PICTURE, wool on felt, central basket of flowers in polychrome thread on a black ground. Taped note to back. Housed under glass in original frame. Circa 1858. 15 1/2" x 15 1/2" sight, 18 5/8" x 18 5/8" OA.
Some toning and fading, scattered losses to wool thread notably to basket, felt with several scattered small holes, frame with wear and scratches, some flaking to edges. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance: The Jack and Tommie Marsh collection, Columbia, SC._x000D_
Descended in the Marsh family.
Catalogue Note: One of three needlework pictures by Mary Linnie Cooper Graham (1840-1902). She was the fourth wife of George James Graham, Sr., who was the sheriff of Williamsburg Co., SC for many years. Both are buried at Indiantown Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Hemingway, SC. The three pieces descended through the family from Hallie Graham Snowden to Mary Elizabeth Snowden Marsh to Samuel J. Marsh.
