Salvador Dali Signed Print Depicting Dante's Divine Comedy, in Glorious Color!

A color lithograph by Spanish artist Salvador Dali (1904-1989) pencil signed by him as "Dali" in the bottom margin. The work, entitled "The Two Wreaths of Spirit," is from Dali's series depicting scenes from Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. Also signed by Dali in stone as "Dali" at center. On cream thick paper with a deckled bottom edge. In near fine condition. The block measures 7.125" x 9.625" while the overall size is 10.25" x 13". Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity by James Spence.

This scene peopled by winged figures, and dominated by a strong diagonal upward-moving line at center, depicts Paradise. It is one of the more soothing of Dali's images from the dramatic and often disturbing series.

The Italian government had commissioned Salvador Dali to illustrate The Divine Comedy ahead of the 700th birthday of the work's author, epic medieval poet Dante Alighieri (ca. 1265-1321). Over the next four years, between 1959-1963, Dali completed 100+ original watercolor illustrations depicting scenes from the Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise. Although the Italians later dropped Dali's commission, it was subsequently picked up a French publishing company. Dali's watercolors were later made into 3,500 woodblock prints.

Salvador Dali was one of the most important figures of the Surrealist movement, as equally known for his exuberant personality as for his evocative images. Over his 70+ year career, Dali experimented in drawing, film, photography, sculpture, theater design, print, and costume to express his off-kilter and imaginative ideas. Dali's most famous work was his 1931 Persistence of Memory, in which melting clocks symbolized the relativity of time.
