Graduated from the National School of Agriculture, he also studied mathematics and architectural drawing.In 2010 the MoMA presents a great retrospective of his work, being the third a Mexican artist and the sixth a Latin American after Diego Rivera (1931), Cândido Portinari (1940), Roberto Matta (1957), Manuel Álvarez Bravo (1997) and Armando Reverón (2007).
