Description
A vintage carved wooden parade staff or dance wand from the Yoruba peoples featuring a kneeling female devotee under openwork superstructure that has been painted with green and yellow paints. Traditionally such staff's were carried during festivals and processions by followers of Shango, the Yoruba god of thunder. The staff features an image of a female devotee with Shango's symbol, the double-headed axe. Shango is thought to control the great powers of nature as one of the orisha, or gods. The staff measures 20 x 8 inches.
