Jack Weldon Humphrey was a very prominent Canadian painter, draughtsman and printmaker. His works are included in most exhibitions that examine 20th Century Canadian art and Canadian modern art; dozens of examples are also in the permanent collections of Canadian museums.

He was born in St. John, New Brunswick, where he lived most of his life and where he died suddenly at the height of his career. (1)

His mediums included oil, watercolor, pastel, gouache*, graphite, tempera*, charcoal, Conte Crayon*, ink, monotype*, serigraph* and mixed mediums. His subjects included portraits, figures, still life, landscapes, harbors, street scenes, genre* and social commentary. The locations were mostly in New Brunswick; however there are many from his travels. His styles included Realism*, Plein Air*, Fauvism*, Expressionism*, Regionalism* and Social Realism*. (2)

Some claim Abstract Expressionism* was also in his oeuvre; however, Seated Figure in Foliage, Shore at Night and Brook Water (see AskART illustrations) are about the limit of his abstraction. Never-the-less it's obvious that in paintings like these there is a fusion between abstraction and figuration; and like abstraction - shape, color and texture are primary subjects.

His formal art education includes classes at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1920 - 1922) under Philip Hale (3); the National Academy of Design, New York (1924 - 1929) under Charles Hawthorne; summers at the Cape Cod School of Art, Provincetown, Massachusetts also under Charles Hawthorne; and at the Arts Students League of New York* ("briefly"). He was also a resident artist at the Tiffany Foundation, Oyster Bay, Long Island (1927). (4)
