A piece of history and a commentary upon it, this remarkable association copy is signed by the author with the inscription in Volume II: "To H.H. Asquith from Winston S. Churchill Oct 25 1923." Volume II is the tome describing Churchill's ouster from the Admiralty due to Asquith's dithering over the war. H. H. Asquith was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916. In August 1914, Asquith took Great Britain and the British Empire into the First World War. In 1915, his government was vigorously attacked for a shortage of munitions and the failure of the Gallipoli Campaign. After being sacked by Asquith as a result of this failed campaign, Churchill thought his career was over. He turned from the making of history to the research and writing of his magnum opus, The World in Crisis. Period commentators and contemporary historians agree with David Fromkin, author of A Peace to End All Peace, "The World Crisis is at once an outstandingly readable history of the First World War – the seminal drama of modern times – and an eyewitness account, especially of its opening years. Whether as a statesman or an author, Churchill was a giant; and The World Crisis towers over most other books about the Great War."
