Description
Early 19th century, 341 x 138 cm, North West Persia, Azerbaijan
Two hexagons and a central shield form fill the red field of this very rare rug, which is probably a Kurdish weaving from the border region between North West Persia and the South Caucasus. The strongly depressed weave using red wefts is reminiscent of early Kazaks. A hooked vine in the style of East Anatolian rugs meanders through the dark brown border whose ground is heavily corroded. – Obvious signs of age and wear, very low pile, various repaired areas. Somewhat reduced ends, damaged sides.
