Tall Ancient African Bura Terracotta Funerary Urn

Item Details

Description

West Africa, present day Niger and Burkina Faso, Bura / Asinda / Sikka area, ca. 3rd to 13th century CE. A tall, conical urn with a wide, flaring mouth, a small hole for firing on one side, and a textured surface made from applied vertical strips of clay with their surfaces repeatedly pressed to form tight horizontal ridges. Little is known about the culture that lived in this area when this statue was made, because it was only recently discovered and there have been very few scientific excavations. What has been found are large cemeteries with impressive necropoli, which provide evidence that this was a wealthy, complex society. They buried their dead in conical urns like this one, often topped by figures decorated with incised or stamped patterns. Size: 6.55" W x 15" H (16.6 cm x 38.1 cm)

Provenance: Mark Clayton collection, Long Beach, California, USA; Mr. Clayton is a noted African expert and collector who recently had Nigerian bronze objects from his collection featured in an exhibition at the UCLA Fowler Museum entitled "Summoning the Ancestors" (September 2018 - March 2019).
