Description
West Africa, Niger, Burkina Faso, Bura Asinda-Sikka culture, 200 to 1200 CE. A large fragment from a vessel, likely a funerary urn, with an elongated stem molded in a stylized person upon a hollow domed base. Great texture is pinched and impressed into the surface; the nodules along the chest may indicate ritualistic scarification! Little is known about this archaeological site, which was discovered and excavated only in the last few decades. It is a necropolis that was filled with anthropomorphic and zoomorphic terracotta figurines, frequently placed above inhumation-style burials; many of these burials had accompanying grave goods, and figures like this one are thought to represent individuals. Size: 4.75" Diameter x 9.75" H (12.1 cm x 24.8 cm); 10.5" H (26.7 cm) on included custom stand.
