Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hollow-built pottery figure depicted in a seated pose atop delineated legs and a singular stool leg. A wide abdomen, globular breasts, rounded shoulders, curved arms, and a hunched posture define the figure's upper body, and a squat neck supports the oversized head. The classic Nayarit visage is composed of recessed, almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose with an accompanying nose ring, wide ears adorned with a trio of earspools, a gaping mouth, and a wide forehead, all beneath a finely-incised coiffure wrapped with a simple headband. Highly-burnished and covered in a deep vermilion slip, this is a wonderful example of ancient west Mexican pottery! Size: 5" W x 11.25" H (12.7 cm x 28.6 cm).

One stool leg missing. Repair to figure's left leg with small nicks along break line. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small chips to legs, torso, head, and verso, with fading and darkening to some areas of pigmentation, and fading to some incised details. Nice earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
