Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A stunning gold earring comprised of 93% gold (equivalent to 22K+) and presenting a lovely design featuring a hemisphere or shield motif adorned by a central granule and a filigree border, joined to a hooped fitting with a cluster of granules at the lower end perhaps intended to represent a grape cluster associated with Bacchus (Greek Dionysos) - the god of the fruit of the vine, wine, as well as fertility, religious rapture, and theatre. While many ancient Roman jewelry designs resembled those of the Greeks and the Egyptians, the hemispheric motif was purely a Roman creation. Size: 1" L x .375" (hemisphere) in diameter (2.5 cm x 1 cm)
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
