Description
Tiano Ceremonial Axe Form Celt
From our northern Caribbean, either Southwest Puerto Rico or from the eastern Dominican Republic.
From Arawakan culture, the Tiano Indians, the first of our hemisphere to encounter Columbus. This fine and highly polished, exotic sea stone shaped as an axe blade, is crafted as a high badge of rank.
High chief or Cacique or for one of his high priests, the object, itself, forced forward its privilege. This one of modest size, slightly striated in light pattern on black stone, it bears a chip at its blade corner. This from the late second phase, 1200-1500 AD and part of a fine large collection of pre-Columbian, Antillean and ancient Caribbean art. Boldly bellied out, 6.75" long x 2 3/16" wide.
