North America, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 1950s CE. An exquisite platter, hand-carved from a single piece of koa wood, of a massive form meant to present and serve an entire fire-roasted pig. The platter has four oblong receptacles on the corners with a thick handle arching between each pair, a quartet of flat circular feet for stabilization, and a shallow basin on top for containing all of the edible morsels. Also known as a "luau platter" for its use in the traditional Hawaiian feast, platters like this example aren not used solely for serving pork products - the natural caramel and coffee hues of the wood nicely complement the beautiful hues of leaves, fruits, and vegetables as well.
