Lot Note: Van Gogh is known to have completed a number of variations of "The Starry Night." This is the only variation we have ever seen or offered for sale that does not include the prominent cypress tree in the foreground. The present drawing also contains more stars and an expanded townscape.

Provenance: Originally from a prominent private collection, the Netherlands; thence to the former owner's family, circa 1960-1970. Now part of a private collection, United States. (We sold another variation of "The Starry Night" from this same collection in 2017. The collection originally owned three variations of the drawing.)
