East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A lovely mold-formed pottery head of a female tomb attendant with petite eyes, a triangular nose, thin lips, and a tall forehead, all beneath a lobed coiffure. The head is covered in a white pigment, with traces of red pigment around her eyes and nose. This type of tomb attendant is known as a "mingqi," or "spirit utensil," created to care for a deceased individual of high status in the tomb. Size: 4.625" W x 4.5" H (11.7 cm x 11.4 cm).

Condition
This is a fragment of a larger figure. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks to neck line, fading to facial features like eyes and mouth, and fading to applied pigmentation. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
