Copper-engraved map, hand-colored. 48.1x55.7 cm (19x22").

Map of Holland with two insets of the Dutch commercial empire in America and Southeast Asia. The first is of Niew Neederland, the Dutch colony in present-day New York, and includes a miniature view of New Amsterdam (New York City). The other is of the East Indies with a similar view of the Dutch trading capital of Batavia (Jakarta). Another inset in the opposite corner details the Maas River valley. Neptune, putti, and mermaids surround the large title cartouche. The coloring of the map is original or of the period, that of the cartouche and city views is possibly a bit later.

Condition

Verso repair/reinforcement along centerfold, stain at lower right corner affecting the inset of the Maas River valley and the distance scale; very good.
