Place Published: No place
Publisher:
Date Published: 18th century?
Description:
Double-hemisphere world map, pen-&-ink with color, with two insets, and a portrait of a nobleman in turban. 23x32.3 (9x12¾"), on a conjugate sheet measuring 28.5x39.5 cm (11¼x15½") overall; 2 pages (4 columns) of ms. Arabic text on verso.
Striking manuscript world map, with what appears to be an insular depiction of California off the west coast of North America, and other interesting and imaginative geographic features. In the Oceans are ghosts of three western European style sailing ships. The insets are of the Iberian peninsula and much of France, with the Straight of Gibraltar and a bit of North Africa; and and Sea of Marmara, with Dardanelles and Bosphorus and adjacent seas and lands. This latter feature perhaps indicates Turkish origin. A captivating and beautifully executed map.
