**Originally Listed At $200**

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden headdress crest used by the Yoruban Egungun society. It has a bell-shaped body with a concave base, a pair of carved slots to hold arms, a stocky neck, and a circular head boasting ovoid eyes and several scarification marks. A register of carved triangular grooves decorates the front of the waist line, and the figure is painted in vibrant hues of yellow, blue, red, black, and white. The coiffure is composed of three projecting horn-like elements painted in black. The Egungun masquerades pay tribute to the spirits of various ancestors. Size: 6.4" W x 20.75" H (16.3 cm x 52.7 cm).
