Description
Pairpoint Bros .958 Sterling Double Handle Porringer: Pairpoint Brothers (John & Frank Pairpoint). Porringer with a wide bowl having a hammered finish and two applied handles with scrollwork. The base engraved, 'H.A.S. from E.H.E' and the side impressed with maker's marks, seated Britannia and Lion head erased.
Dimensions are: 1 3/4" high X 8 1/8" wide X 5" wide. Weight: 308 g, 9.92 troy oz.. All measurements are approximate.
Condition: Free of chips and cracks.
This item is part of the Slade family holdings of paintings, sterling silver and Chinese porcelain (see Oakridge Auction Gallery's March 14th auction, lots. 149 to lot. 155, which was a Chinese blanc de chine Dehua figurine of a robed Bodhidharma or Damo which sold for $416,000USD). The collection was assembled by several members of the family and then by descent to the present owner. The collection was begun by Henry Adolphus Warre Slade (1869 - 1936). He was a British businessman, member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong (1908/09) and the Director of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation between 1900 and 1902. The collection was added to by his sons, Royal Navy Commander Gerald Gordon Slade, who fought in both World Wars, and his brother Maurice Gordon Slade, who is pictures (photo not included). The Slade family hold peerage and are noted in “Burke's Peerage” by Charles Mosley. This piece came into the family collection in 1952 when Miss. Slade inherited several items from the estate of E. M. Hutchinson of Windmill Lodge, St. Andrews, in Fife, Scotland. It is listed on the Inventory and Valuation sheet (not included with this lot) which was provided by John Macgregor of St. Andrews Ltd. as “HM Silver Porringer “Dublin” with two handles engraved “HAS from EHE”” and was valued at 15 shillings.
