Luristan, modern day northwestern Iran, Marlik Culture, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. This is a gorgeous red earthenware jug, coil-made, with a cylindrical handle and a slightly conical spout rings by twin narrow bands at its base. There is no pronounced rim, just a slight widening of the spout. The body is piriform, with a slight, round foot. This piece resembles those from the Amlash archaeological site, which was a group of megalithic tombs provisioned with vessels similar to these. The Amlash area produced by far the finest pottery objects in Iran at the time. Size: 4.9" W x 8.4" H (12.4 cm x 21.3 cm)
Provenance: Ex - Zwar collection acquired in various galleries in Tehran between 1977 and 1979

Condition
Intact, with a difficult-to-see stable crack on one side; very small chip to spout; slight dirt encrustation on the shoulder. There is some dirt on the interior that is creating a rattling sound - the pot is not broken!
