"To the Honble the judges of Frederick County Court - The Petition of John Ross Key humbly herewith that a judgment was rendered against him & in favor of a certain Isachar Shaw by one of the State's Justices of the peace for the sum of current money debt & on the …. day of ….. In the year 1803 from which said judgment the said Petitioner (thinking himself aggrieved prays an appeal … "
A lovely example of Key's signature. Well known as the author of America's national anthem, ''The Star-Spangled Banner'', Key was also an influential lawyer in his day.
