Kennedy John
JFK Assassinated - Successor LBJ Swearing-In Ceremony Aboard Air Force One, Original Photo Taken & Owned by Cecil Stoughton
Original vintage photograph of Lyndon B. Johnson's swearing-in ceremony on November 22, 1963, taken by and personally owned by JFK White House photographer Cecil W. Stoughton (1920-2008). The glossy black and white print shows Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson at off-center, flanked by Jacqueline Kennedy at left and Lady Bird Johnson at right. Other recognizable figures include Federal Judge Sarah T. Hughes, who administered the oath, and Texan Congressmen Albert Richard Thomas and Jack Brooks, among others. The reverse is numbered in orange pencil. Expected minor wear to corners and edges, else near fine. 10" x 8".
This Cecil Stoughton photograph is in the collection of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum under accession number ST-1A-18-63. Stoughton took this photo, along with others, using a Hasselblad camera. He carefully positioned Jackie so that the blood-stained right side of her pink Chanel suit would not be visible.
The presidential aircraft was parked at Love Field in Dallas while Jackie awaited the delivery of her husband's body, and while Johnson was sworn in. 27 people crammed into the unairconditioned airplane stateroom to witness the latter ceremony. Judge Hughes administered the presidential oath of office at 2:38 pm, using the dead president's bedside missal. Kennedy had been pronounced dead just 90 minutes earlier at Parkland Memorial Hospital.
