Edward VIII TLS Mentioning "The Duchess"

1p typewritten letter signed by Edward, Duke of Windsor (1894-1972) as "Edward Duke of Windsor" at lower right. Written in New York City on June 16, 1970.  On bifold cream stationery paper with partly printed "The Towers / The Waldorf Astoria / New York 10022" letterhead, complete with a wreath and "W.A." monogram at upper left. With expected paper folds, else near fine. 5.375" x 6.625".

The former king of England wrote to Mrs. Elsa P. Thern, in part:

“I write to thank you very much for the fine pipe carved by your uncle. Both The Duchess and I find the likeness a very good one.

I am therefore glad to have this momento [sic] of the past and wish to assure you how much your thought in sending it is appreciated.

Thanking you again and with kind regards.”

Just two months earlier, in early April 1970, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor had dined at the White House at the invitation of President Richard M. Nixon. The couple frequently visited the United States.
