Jean Andre de Luc was an 18th-century Swiss geologist known for his studies on meteorology and contributions to atmospheric philosophy. He wrote a number of works and letters including ‘Research on Modifications of the Atmosphere’ which contains explanations of his experiments on moisture, water evaporation, thermometers, and hygrometers. This work was the first work to include the correct rules for measuring heights using a barometer and includes Luc’s advocacy for the use of mercury instead of alcohol in thermometers.
These three volumes feature 7 fine, folding engravings and charts of the use of instruments and experiments.
