WWII ERA, UNDER SECRETARY of U.S. NAVY, 4 STAR FLAG w ANCHOR, RED WOOL, AMERICAN
Description: Circa 1945 Old Vintage "UNDER SECRETARY OF THE NAVY" Nautical Military Flag. Flag is constructed of red wool background with embellished cotton anchor applied to both sides. There are also four stars in each corner applied to both sides of the red field. Applied stars and anchor are machine stitched. Canvas hoist has two metal grommets for hanging. Hand stamped on the hoist is text reading; "UNDER SEC. OF NAVY FLAG 8". Top edge and fly edge are machine hemmed. Bottom edge is machine selvaged.

Research indicates that the position of "UNDER SECRETARY OF THE NAVY" was created in 1940, and the first flag was created in 1943. The materials and construction technique of this flag is consistent with flags of that era. The first Under Secretary of the Navy was James V. Forrestal (1940-44)--he was the first to fly this type of flag. His successor was Ralph Austin Bard (1944-45). Presumably one of these men flew this "Under Secretary of the Navy" flag early in the use of this position and symbol. This position is the second-highest ranking civilian official in the U.S. Navy. Obviously, a scarce flag due to the need of use being centered around one person.

Approximate size is 26" x 18". (An easily frameable size for display.) Condition: toning, soiling, numerous scattered holes, light damp stains including on white cotton anchor. Please see photos for additional condition review.
