It was the Parisian dealer Ambroise Vollard who prompted Braque in the early 1930s to create a livre d'artiste. Braque chose to illustrate Hesiod's Theogony and became deeply involved with the project, producing countless preparatory drawings, and creating a series of etchings that stand as milestones of 20th-century printmaking. However, the notoriously meticulous master printer Galanis, to whom the publication was entrusted, had still not finished the book at the time of Vollard's death in 1939. Aime Maeght took up the project and finally published the Theogony in 1955.
The Art of the French Book 44; Blaizot, Bibliotheque Paul Bonet 250 (le plus grands des livres de Braque) Valier 23; Johnson, Vollard 171.
