Description
**Originally Listed At $600**
East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A gorgeous round-bodied ceramic lantern with an integrated hook at its top, its body glazed with a thick, deep green pigment. One lower side is open in a wide rectangle to accommodate a candle or other light source. Deep scores on the sides would have allowed light to escape from the vessel in a pretty pattern of lines and dots. Lanterns play an important role in traditional Chinese life, and, beginning in the Han Dynasty, the Spring Lantern Festival (usually in February or March of the Gregorian calendar) became a time of great significance. Size: 5.35" W x 11.25" H (13.6 cm x 28.6 cm)
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
