Rare souvenir of a banquet given in honor of John Pender, a pioneer of submarine telegraphy. the book collects speeches, toasts, and telegrams detailing Pender's accomplishments and, through him, the development of worldwide underwater communications.
Pender, a native of Scotland, guaranteed the success of submarine telegraphy, at the time a new and untested technology. After many international failures installing underwater communications cables, Pender sunk all of his personal fortune into the depths of the Atlantic - and recovered it. His gutsy financial acument represented daring and perseverance in risky commercial endeavors. Pender ultimately snatched financial success in this new industry from the United States and handed it to the United Kingdom. For this action, he was knighted.
