Unusual 19th Century Iron Baker's Candle Lighting

Item Details

Description

Measures 11" long x 3 3/4" wide. Although this example has one candle socket, the winterthur museum in delaware has a 2 socket one. It can be seen on page 39 of the "metals" section in winterthurs online collections catalogue. Winterthur describes it as a chamber light, however the evidence leans toward a baker's light. The piece is much too heavy and clunky for a chamber light. The open handle is missing its wooden handle extension pole, which is better suited to reach the inside of a bake oven to check the progress of the baking. Also, the bottom is charred indicating time spent on the hot bricks of the interior of an oven.
