Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A wonderful wheel-thrown miniature krater with salmon-hued designs - a register of chevron motifs framed by linear bands above and below - over a rich, lustrous black glaze. The vessel is defined by a squat ringed foot, a tall undulating body with a flared rim, and a pair of applied strap handles. Brilliant areas of silvery iridescence complement the jet-black glaze. Size: 2.75" W handlespan x 2.125" H (7 cm x 5.4 cm)
Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added pale red decoration over black glaze.
