A beautifully carved breccia Taino Cemi/Stamp in the form of a bird figure, c. AD 1000 - 1500, in a tan/yellow breccia. Well-carved in a compact pose, the bird's feet underneath the body and head facing with large concave eyes, panels containing geometric and curving lines decorate the wings, tail and body, the underside with a 4 quadrant base symbolizing the 4 sacred corners of the earth, N.S.E. and W. 3 1/2 x 2 5/8 x 2 1/2 in (8.9 x 6.7 x 6.4 cm). Light deposits. The consensus is the stamp-like bases were actually engraved symbols not useful as stamps...still the misnomer prevails.
