Item Details
Description
Black ink drawing on tan wove paper, untitled abstract with figures, signed* (Jackson Pollock, 1912-1956). Circa 1940-1950. 5 7/8 x 14 1/4 inches. Small tear at center top edge (repaired), otherwise good condition. Unframed for inspection and shipping. Sold without frame.

Provenance: Arthur P. Gordon, Westchester, NY, and Beverly Hills and Encino, California. Thence by descent to the present owner, Mr. Gordon's great nephew, whose family acquired the drawings as a gift from Arthur Gordon sometime in the late 1960's or early 1970's, the exact date being unknown.

Arthur Gordon was a long time friend of actress, Greer Garson, whose home he purchased in Encino, California. According to Arthur Gordon's own notes, it was through Garson that he met her close friend, Peggy Guggenheim, who was instrumental in launching Jackson Pollock's career. Arthur Gordon may have acquired the present lot directly from the artist, possibly through an introduction from Peggy Guggenheim, although there is no evdience to support that theory.

Lot Note: Newly discovered or previously unknown works by Jackson Pollock are extremely rare. Many counterfeits exist, especially of the artist's "drip period" paintings. Bidders are advised to seek the opinion of a third party specialist before placing their bids since Preston Hall Gallery is not an expert on works by Jackson Pollock.
