§ Graham Rust (British, b.1942) The Saint-Tropez Frieze signed lower right "Graham Rust" watercolour and ink 14.50 x 50cm (6 x 20in)
Exhibited: The Roger Ramsay Gallery, 212 West Superior Street, Suite 503, Chicago, Illinois 60610, USA. Literature: Graham Rust, The Painted House, London: Cassell, 1991, illus. pp. 32-33 Other Notes: Graham Rust studied at the Central School of Arts in London, and the National Academy of Art, New York. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1965 and since then has worked throughout the world. Renowned for his murals and ceiling paintings, he has also illustrated several books. His most important work is the mural "The Temptation" in the entrance hall of Ragley Hall, Warwickshire, which took over a decade to complete. The present painting was a design for a long window frieze at a medieval house in Cogolin, near Saint Tropez., telling the legend of St Tropez, a Roman centurion beheaded at Pisa - St Tropez's body was put to sea accompanied by a cockerel and a dog, and was found untouched when the boat washed ashore in France. The town of Cogolin was named for the cockerel of the legend.
