This is a wonderful ancient fragment of a sculpture from the Sokoto culture, ca. 500 BCE to 200 CE. An relatively rare Sokoto terracotta head featuring the characteristic overhanging brows, heavy lidded eyes and large domed forehead. Sculptural works from the city of Sokoto in northwestern Nigeria were only first discovered in the early 1990s, so very little is understood about them. Sokoto pieces date to the same period as the Nok culture to the south. The head measures 4.5 x 2 inches ( 5.75 inches tall on custom display stand.)
